Allegro Microsystems Introduces A User-configurable Dual Fault Feature

Allegro MicroSystems, LLC announced a new high-precision Hall effect current sensor IC ACS720 with a variety of programmable fault levels for industrial and consumer applications, especially for motor control and power inverter applications. One of the key advantages of the Allegro ACS720 is the ability to provide the required high isolation with a smaller bill of materials through a proprietary IC SOIC-16W package. The ACS720 is powered from a single 5V supply that maintains an output voltage swing of 0 to 3V and a stable zero-current output of 1.5V. In this way, the ACS720 is capable of supporting a typical 3.3V ADC on many MCUs when operating with a 5V supply. In addition, the ACS720's high power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) can suppress noise from the PCB or system power supply, thus maintaining high accuracy in high noise environments.

The ACS720 device has a user-configurable dual fault function, and fast and slow fault outputs can be used for short circuit and overcurrent fault detection. A resistor divider from the ACS720 power supply can be used to set the fault level, and the fault output is an open drain that allows the user to pull it up to the MCU compatible voltage. The open-drain output also allows for simple logic OR of multiple sensor fault outputs.

ACS720 also integrates differential current detection, can inhibit the external magnetic field, greatly simplifying the three-phase motor applications in the circuit board layout. Thanks to the Allegro patented digital temperature compensation technology, the accuracy of near-closed-looping in this open-loop sensor IC provides a smaller, more economical solution for current sensing applications that are traditionally dependent on closed-loop technology sensors Affordable solution.

The ACS720 is housed in a small surface mount SOIC16 package with 100% matt tin plated and is compatible with standard lead-free printed circuit board assembly. Inside the device, in addition to RoHS-exempt flip-chip high-temperature lead-based solder ball, the device is also used in lead-free design. The ACS720 device has been fully calibrated at the factory.
